Electric and magnetic fields or electromagnetic field (EMF) is a form of radiation from electric power from common devices and from natural and artificial lighting. Since Tesla is an electric car, it logically must emit EMF. Moreover, since Tesla carries a large battery and electric motor that can generate high voltages, Tesla battery must emit high levels of EMF. The general worry might be that Tesla Model 3, Model S, and Model X cars must have high levels of EMF danger. Also, are there dangerously high levels of EMF emitted while Tesla is charging? Is EMF radiation a problem in EVs? If yes, do we need EMF protection in Tesla? All these are great questions and in this blog, I am going to try to demystify some of the concepts and hopefully reduce EMF danger worries and concerns with Tesla cars.
Are we seating on the moving microwave when driving Tesla ?
I have tested electromagnetic field radiation levels in Tesla and other non electric cars and would like to share my reasons why not to worry about EMF radiation in Tesla.

No Conclusive Scientific Evidence of EMF Radiation Harming Health
The radiation from common electric devices is considered to be non ionizing and low to mid level frequency radiation. The EMF radiation is measured in both microtesla and milligauss. The safe levels for this radiation is considered to be no more than 0.40 microtesla of daily exposure. Currently, from several different sources that I was able to find, there are no direct and conclusive links between EMF radiation and health problems. Here is one of the references to read:
It seems that there are people who are more sensitive to low frequency EMF radiation than others.
Gasoline Cars also Emit EMF Radiation
To my surprise non-electric gasoline cars show high levels of EMF radiation. In one of the ICE cars, I have measured a continuous over 0.80 microtesla radiation levels int the front and rear floors. This might be due to wiring and this high level was continuous for the duration of the drive.
Also, there are surprisingly high levels of EMF in the rear seats. This is hard to explain since there is no battery and should not be much wiring in the seats.
Lastly, glove box was also emitting high over 0.40 microtesla.
If you worried about being exposed to EMF radiation in EV, I would take a closer look at EMF levels in one of your gasoline cars and reevaluate your worries.
Tesla EMF Radiation Levels are within Safe Levels
I measured EMF radiation levels in Tesla both while stationary and driving. The radiation levels in front and rear sections inside of Tesla cabin are documented below. The measurements were taken during several days to make sure that we are getting more stable numbers.
When driving under high voltage power lines and train stations which also have power lines, the EMF levels are always higher and confuse the in-car measurements.
Tesla Driver Seat Floor EMF Radiation Level
One would think the EMF radiation on the floor would be the highest due to this is where the big battery is located along with the wiring. However, I found that readings vary from low 0.37 to high over 0.80 microtesla.
Interestingly, the radiation levels vary depending if car is accelerating or decelerating. When car is static, there is no radiation emitted at all. Tesla must be shutting down everything to save energy. This does not however happen in ICE cars. The wires seem to be constantly burning with electricity in gasoline cars.
Tesla Front Passenger Seat EMF Radiation Level
This reading was taken while driving and as you can see there is 0 microtesla EMF radiation or very little. When stationary, the reading is always 0.
Tesla Rear Passenger Seat EMF Radiation Level
The reading in the rear passenger seats was lightly above the 0.40 microtesla at some time while driving but overall it stayed within normal or under 0.40 microtesla. Being rear wheel drive with big electric motor in the back, I would think rear seats would be screaming EMF. However, this was not the case. When accelerating or decelerating to regen, there is a slightly above or at 0.40 microtesla reading. Again, when stationary, it is always 0.
Tesla Rear Floor EMF Radiation Level
Rear floor is where we are getting closer to both large battery, wiring, and the large rear electric motor. The radiation levels in this location are higher than 0.40 microtesla but not screamingly high between 0.50 to 0.80 microtesla.

When stationary, all is reading 0 microtesla. Tesla is really shutting down things.
Tesla Front Arm Rest EMF Radiation Levels
This is where Tesla seem to be storing the high powered microwave. This is a joke! The highest EMF radiation is located in the arm rest. This area emits above 0.40 more close to 0.80 microtesla. Arm rest must contain speakers, microphones, transmitters, or some other fairly high powered electrical devices.
Tesla Front Glove Box EMF Radiation Levels
Tesla glove box is another high voltage area. This must be packing few devices and transmitters. The levels are also above 0.40 microtesla.
Tesla Driver Instrument Panel EMF Radiation Level
Tesla driver instrument digital display registers a slightly elevated EMF readings since this is a digital display. But no big deal here. None sits so close to their instrument displays.
Tesla Touch Screen EMF Radiation Levels
Surprisingly, EMF radiation from the Tesla touch screen is not high at all. Nothing to worry about here. I tried to measure using different angles and sometimes I did get readings higher than 0.40 microtesla but again no one sits close to their touchscreen display.
Is there EMF danger in Tesla?
If you look at my measured EMF radiation levels, there is really no big problem with radiation in Tesla even though this is a fully electric vehicle which carries a high voltage battery, wiring and of course powerful electric motor. The driver and passenger seats is where we sit while driving and as you can see these locations do not emit EMF radiation or emit very little. The seats insulate us very well from radiation on the floor. But, even on the floor, the radiation is not as high.
If you really worried about EMF radiation, try to measure the levels close to your microwave. Microwaves are notoriously high emitters of EMF radiation. By standing 2 feet away from my microwave, I was still measuring well above 1.0 microtesla.
